Mammoth ivory is dense, hard and relatively stable once stabilized. Its natural color ranges from creamy white to deep brown, depending on the terrain of origin and the minerals absorbed. Its concentric layered structure gives it a characteristic striated appearance, appreciated for its beauty and uniqueness. It works well with conventional tools, but requires particular attention to heat when sanding.

Mammoth molar

Molars feature a highly recognizable lamellar surface, with parallel striations alternating between enamel and dentin. This unique natural pattern makes each piece non-reproducible. More fragile than ivory, molars are generally stabilized to reinforce their cohesion before cutting.

Bone, rib, pulp and fragments

These pieces offer rougher textures, often stabilized for workshop use. Their open grain accepts colored resins well during stabilization, enabling highly sought-after visual effects. Stabilized ground mammoth and mammoth pulp offer a more mineral appearance and extensive customization possibilities.

Prehistoric fossils (giant stag, elk, reindeer, rhytine)

What's the difference between mammoth ivory and mammoth molars?
