Sambar deer antler (Rusa unicolor) is one of the most sought-after materials in artisanal knife-making for crafting exceptional handles. Native to Southeast Asia, this large deer produces particularly dense and compact antler, with warm hues ranging from honey brown to dark brown, and a sturdy internal structure that makes it easy to work with in the workshop. The logs—also known as “merrains”—are the cylindrical sections of the antler; the crowns—or “meules”—correspond to the wider base, often marked by a characteristic textured surface.
At Mercorne, every sambar log and ring is selected for the quality of its structure, density, and proportions. Our pieces are cut in France at our workshop in Puy-de-Dôme. The collection includes 41 items—short logs, long logs, and rough-cut stumps—to accommodate all handle sizes. Olivier is available to advise you on the best choice for your project.
