The sambar handle is a section of sambar deer(Rusa unicolor) antler cut lengthwise to reveal a workable surface that is both dense and slightly porous. This South-East Asian cervid produces some of the most massive woods in the deer family, appreciated by knife makers for their natural grain, visual warmth and shock resistance. Each piece is unique: shades of beige, honey and brown, with a slight surface ripple that gives the finished knife a distinctive character.
At Mercorne, sambar handles have been selected and cut in our workshop for over 34 years. We offer a wide range of gauges - lengths, sections and qualities - to meet the needs of beginners and experienced cutlers alike. Do you have any doubts about a particular piece? Olivier is available to advise you personally.
