The natural color of sambar ranges from creamy beige to golden brown, with variations depending on the age of the animal and the season of fall. The outer surface often features a characteristic natural groove, which cutlers exploit to ensure a secure grip without additional finishing.

Machining

Sambar is easy to cut and drill with conventional tools. It sands well up to 400-600 grit, and it is advisable to work with low-speed cutters to avoid overheating the pith. A light impregnation with raw linseed oil at the end of shaping stabilizes the piece and revives the colors.

Frequently asked questions about sambar handles

What's the difference between a sambar handle and a European deer handle?

Sambar deer produce much more massive antlers than European deer(Cervus elaphus). Sambar cross-sections are generally wider and denser, making it possible to create imposing handles without assembly. The color of sambar is also warmer and more even than that of red deer, which is often lighter or grayer.

Are sambar handles resistant to humidity?

Deer antler is naturally not very hygroscopic compared with vegetable woods. However, prolonged exposure to water can cause slight swelling of the central pith. Treatment with linseed oil or beeswax at the end of shaping limits this phenomenon and prolongs the life of the piece.

Can a sambar handle be stained or stabilized?

Vacuum stabilization is possible, but not very common for this material, as the cortex is already dense. Staining with alcohol or water, on the other hand, penetrates well into the medullary zone and produces interesting contrast effects. Stabilization is recommended for pieces with a wide medulla or micro-fissures.

Is the sambar a protected species?

The sambar deer(Rusa unicolor) is classified as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List, but is not listed in CITES Appendices I or II for trade in its naturally fallen antlers.
