Bubinga wood has a high density, generally ranging from 0.85 to 0.96 g/cm³, which classifies it among dense and durable tropical woods. This specific gravity gives it excellent natural durability and good long-term stability, even under conditions of varying humidity.

Color and Appearance

Its base color ranges from pinkish brown to reddish brown, with mahogany undertones that become more pronounced when treated with oil or wax. The grain is often wavy or interlocked, producing characteristic shimmering effects under raking light. Some pieces feature contrasting sapwood—light blond against a dark red background—which is a sought-after decorative feature for high-end knife handles.

Machining Characteristics

Despite its hardness, bubinga machines well with standard tools, provided the tools are kept sharp. It can be slightly abrasive on cutting edges due to the presence of silica. Sanding requires a gradual progression of grit sizes to avoid marks; it responds well to final polishing and accepts both water-based and solvent-based oils and finishes.

Is bubinga resistant to moisture?

Yes, its high density and natural durability give it good resistance to occasional exposure to moisture. For a kitchen knife handle that is regularly exposed to water, it should be protected with a penetrating oil, and prolonged immersion should be avoided—as with any unstabilized hardwood.

Can bubinga be stabilized?

Stabilizing bubinga is technically possible but uncommon, as its natural density is already high and its dimensional stability is satisfactory. The resin penetrates less easily than in porous woods. For heavy-duty use, natural bubinga remains a reliable option without additional treatment.

Is bubinga easy to stain?
