Cutlery screws: role and requirements

In a handcrafted or semi-industrial knife, screws fulfill several essential functions: assembling handle plates to the tang, attaching the pocket clip, ensuring the pivot of a folding blade, or securing the different parts of a composite handle. Unlike rivets or epoxy-only assemblies, screws offer a valuable advantage: reversibility. Knifemakers can dismantle, adjust or replace a component without destroying the whole. For this reason, knife screws have become an indispensable part of contemporary cutlery, whether handcrafted or mass-produced.

Properties and technical features

Materials and strength

Screws used in cutlery are mainly made of austenitic stainless steel (A2 or A4) or titanium. A4 stainless steel, known as "marine grade", offers corrosion resistance particularly suited to outdoor or kitchen knives exposed to humidity. Titanium, which is lighter and slightly less resistant to abrasion, is preferred in high-end knives for its aesthetic appeal and light weight. Titanium screws can easily be anodized, adding a touch of color to match the rest of the piece.

Metric threads: M2 and M3

The metric system is the standard for European cutlery. M2 (2 mm) and M3 (3 mm) diameters are the most widely used. M2 is suitable for fine fastenings, particularly on flat or thin knives. M3 is more commonly used for handle inserts or pivots, which have to withstand greater mechanical stress. It is imperative to respect the indicated screw pitch (generally 0.4 mm for M2 and 0.5 mm for M3) to ensure correct tightening without risk of stripping.

Head shapes

The shape of the head determines both the aesthetics and the mechanical behavior of the fastener. The countersunk (conical) head is flush with the surface of the handle when tightened, offering a smooth, discreet finish. The domed head protrudes slightly, making it easier to loosen by hand, and can also be used as a design element. The flat head offers an extended clamping surface, useful for friable or low-hardness materials. The type of recess (Torx, hexagonal, cruciform) determines the tools to be used and the resistance to unscrewing.

How to choose knife screws?

The choice depends above all on the knife's use and design. Here are the criteria to consider:

• Diameter: M2 for fine fasteners and lightweight knives, M3 for handle assemblies or mechanically stressed pivots.
• Material: A4 stainless steel for wet or food environments, titanium for high-end parts or assemblies where lightness is a priority.
• Head shape: countersunk for a flush, discreet finish, domed for reversibility and design, flat for soft or fragile materials.
• Cavity : Torx recommended for greater resistance to slippage when tightening, especially on small diameters.
• Length: to be adapted precisely to the thickness of the handle or stack, with threads engaged over at least 2 times the diameter to guarantee hold.

Frequently asked questions about knife screws

What's the difference between M2 and M3 screws for knives?

M2 (diameter 2 mm) is suitable for light fastenings, notably on thin folding blades or pocket clips. The M3 (3 mm diameter) is more robust and suitable for handle assemblies or pivots subject to repeated stress. When in doubt, M3 is generally preferred for handle inserts, M2 for thin accessories.

Do I need threadlocker on knife screws?

On pivot screws and screws subject to repeated vibration, the use of Loctite 243 threadlocker (medium strength) is recommended. This prevents progressive loosening with use. For insert screws that need to be easily removed, it's best not to use a threadlocker, or to use a low-strength formula.

Can I anodize titanium screws myself?

Yes, anodizing titanium is accessible to amateur knifemakers with simple equipment (variable-voltage power supply, dilute phosphoric acid bath). The color obtained depends on the voltage applied. This technique is commonly used to coordinate screws with other knife components (spacers, pivot) without altering the metal's mechanical properties.

What type of impression should be used on small cutlery screws?

Torx (6-point star) is widely recommended for small diameters, as it offers better resistance to slippage than cruciform. It enables more precise tightening with less risk of damaging the head, which is particularly appreciated on finishing screws in titanium or polished stainless steel.
