Rivets, rosettes and wires join the plates, inserts and tang, distributing mechanical stress along the entire length of the handle. A well-dimensioned assembly prevents play, protects the wood or noble materials from cracking, and gives the piece a meticulous finish that is visible to the eye. These elements, often unobtrusive when installed, are the invisible guarantors of the tool's quality.

Rivets

Cutlery rivets are available in stainless steel, brass and copper. Stainless steel offers maximum resistance to corrosion and heat, making it particularly suitable for kitchen knives subject to repeated washing and humidity. Brass and copper are more malleable, developing a natural patina over time and complementing light-colored woods or organic materials such as horn. They are prized for folding and hunting knives. Some rivets can be polished, textured or patinated to match a specific aesthetic.

Rosettes

Rosettes are flat discs that cover screw heads or assembly points. Made from brass, steel or copper, they serve a dual function: protecting the handle structure around the attachment points, and providing a clean visual finish. A well-fitted rosette has clean edges and an even contact with the material, with no play or protrusion.

Wires

Wires - hollow metal cylinders - serve to stabilize the mounting screws inside the handle. They distribute stresses around the fastening point and prevent the micro-cracks that can appear in fragile materials such as certain stabilized woods or compressed synthetics. Their dimensional accuracy is essential: too loose a thread creates play, too tight a thread risks cracking the handle during installation.

How to choose rivets, rosettes and wires for a knife?

The choice depends on three main parameters: handle material, use of the knife and aesthetic appeal.

• Handle material: for hardwood or dense composite materials, stainless steel guarantees long-term durability. For horn, stabilized wood or natural materials, brass or copper is often more suitable, as it can be worked without tearing the material.
• Knifeuse: knives intended for use in food or damp environments require stainless steel components. For a collector's or ceremonial knife, the aesthetic choice takes precedence.
• Diameter and length: dimensions must correspond exactly to the thickness of the plates and the drilling depth. A deviation of just a few tenths of a millimetre is enough to compromise the finish.
• Visual consistency: it is generally advisable to match the material of rivets to that of rosettes, and to avoid mixing finishes (gloss/matte) unless there is a deliberate aesthetic effect.

What's the difference between a rivet and a handle wire?

A rivet is a solid element designed to mechanically fasten two parts by deforming its head. A wire is a hollow cylinder that surrounds a screw or axle to stabilize it and protect the surrounding material. Both can coexist in the same assembly, each providing a distinct function.

Can stainless steel and brass be mixed on the same knife?

It's technically possible, but you need to anticipate variations in behavior over time: brass develops a patina, while steel remains stable. In intensive or wet use, the combination can create an undesirable visual contrast. For a collector's knife, on the other hand, this mix can be a deliberate aesthetic choice.

How to avoid cracks when installing a wire?

Drilling should be carried out with a drill bit perfectly adapted to the wire diameter, without any play. Ideally, installation should be carried out using a press or a soft-faced mallet, without violent percussion. On fragile materials (resin, fine horn, very dry wood), it is advisable to pre-moisten slightly or use a compatible adhesive to limit stress during installation.

Are brass rivets suitable for kitchen knives?

Brass is sensitive to prolonged humidity and acidic environments. For kitchen knives used daily and washed regularly, stainless steel is more appropriate. Brass remains an excellent choice for non-food knives or pieces with a strong aesthetic character.

Which finish to choose for rivets: mirror polished or matt?

Mirror polish accentuates the contrast with dark materials and is ideal for prestige pieces. Matte blends in better with natural handles (horn, raw wood, bone) and ages more harmoniously over time. In all cases, consistency with the knife's other metal components - guard, bolster, decoration - must guide the choice.
