Amboina Wood | Handcrafted Knife Handles | Mercorne

Amboina burl (Pterocarpus indicus), also known as amboyna burl, is one of the rarest and most prized woods in artistic cutlery. Derived from the natural growths of the Pterocarpus indicus tree, native to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia), it is distinguished by its deep, iridescent swirling patterns—unique to each piece—which make it the material of choice for the handles of exceptional knives and high-end musical instrument making.

At Mercorne, every block of Amboina burl has been hand-selected for 34 years based on the quality of its patterns and the intensity of its sheen. Cut in our workshop in France into a wide range of sizes and shapes, it is available in both natural and stabilized versions. Have questions about choosing a piece or the final finish? Olivier personally answers all your technical questions.
