Properties and characteristics of different disc types

Sisal disc

Sisal is the most rigid of the plant fibers used for polishing discs. Its dense, abrasive structure makes it ideal for the initial stage: removal of machining marks, elimination of deep scratches and surface preparation prior to the finishing stages. It is used with a filled abrasive paste and is equally suited to steels and hard composite materials.

Felt disc

Denser than cotton and stiffer than flannel, the felt disc occupies an intermediate position in the polishing progression. It eliminates the residual imperfections left by sisal, and works on edges and recessed areas with precision. It is a precision polishing disc, particularly appreciated for handles with complex geometries.

Cotton and flannel discs

The cotton disc is the most widely used in cutlery for fine polishing. Its flexibility enables it to work on curved surfaces without marking the material. Flannel, finer and even more supple, is reserved for superfinishing stages: it deposits a fine layer of paste and produces a uniform shiny effect, even on delicate materials such as mother-of-pearl, bone or stabilized wood.

How to choose a polishing wheel for cutlery?

The choice of polishing wheel depends on two parameters: the intended polishing stage and the nature of the material being worked on. A logical progression generally follows this order:

• Sisal - first pass, removal of machining scratches, rough surface
• Felt - second pass, intermediate polishing, precision zones
• Cotton - third pass, fine polishing, flat and curved surfaces
• Flannel - finishing and superfinishing, mirror effect on all materials

On soft materials (wood, bone, resin), avoid excessive pressure with sisal, which can burn the surface. On stainless steels, a cotton disc impregnated with green paste gives excellent results as early as the third step. For carbon steel blades, the complete sisal-felt-cotton progression is recommended to achieve a mirror polish with no residual streaks.

What's the difference between a polishing wheel and an abrasive wheel?

An abrasive disc (emery cloth, fixed grit) scratches the surface to abrade it mechanically. A polishing disc is flexible and is used with a loose abrasive paste. It works by gentle friction and controlled heat, producing a shiny result without aggressively removing material.

Can I use the same disc with different polishing pastes?

It is not advisable to change paste on the same disc without cleaning it. Old paste residues can contaminate the new abrasive and leave streaks. Ideally, you should keep one disc for each paste and each stage of progress.

At what speed should a polishing disc be turned?

The recommended speed is generally between 1,200 and 2,500 rpm, depending on the diameter of the disc and the hardness of the material. A large-diameter disc at high speed generates more heat: watch the temperature on sensitive materials such as acrylic resins or stabilized woods.

How to maintain a polishing disc

After use, remove paste residues with a soft wire brush or disc-cleaning comb. Store discs flat or suspended, away from moisture. A well-maintained disc can be used on several hundred parts before needing to be replaced.
