Buffalo horn (Bubalus bubalis) is one of the oldest and most esteemed materials used in cutlery. Derived from the Asian water buffalo, it is distinguished by its deep black color, sometimes with mahogany-brown highlights, and by a naturally lustrous surface that becomes even more lustrous with polishing. Its keratin composition makes it remarkably resistant to moisture and daily wear - qualities that make it a preferred choice for knife handles intended for intensive use or for collecting.
At Mercorne, buffalo horn has been rigorously selected for 34 years: thickness, regularity of grain, absence of cracks. Each piece is cut in our workshop in France into slabs, half-horns or whole horns, to suit all cutlery projects. Not sure which format is right for your blade? Olivier will personally answer your technical questions.
