The color palette of kudu horn ranges from translucent light brown to almost black dark brown, with organic transition zones and natural patterns that never repeat. The surface has a fine grain and a slight transparency on the thinnest areas, which takes on a beautiful depth after polishing with oil or wax.

Resistance and durability

Keratin offers superior shock resistance to many tropical woods of the same apparent hardness. The horn absorbs vibrations, does not crack when dry and tolerates variations in humidity well, provided it is regularly maintained with a neutral oil.

How to choose kudu horn for your knife?

Frequently asked questions about kudu horn

Can I put kudu horn in contact with water?

Yes, keratin is resistant to occasional humidity. However, it is recommended not to soak a horn handle, and to regularly apply a neutral oil (mineral oil or linseed oil) to keep the material supple and prevent micro-cracks.

How to shape kudu horn when hot?

Simply soak the horn in water at 80-90°C for 5 to 10 minutes - it then becomes supple and can be flattened with a press or molded by hand. As it cools, it retains its given shape. This operation can be repeated several times without damaging the material.

Does kudu horn require a CITES permit?

No. Unlike elephant ivory or mammoth parts, kudu horn is not subject to CITES regulations. It is freely traded in Europe, provided that the parts come from legal sources - which Mercorne guarantees for all its supplies.

What's the difference between kudu horn and buffalo horn?
