Ash wood: origins and identity

Common ash(Fraxinus excelsior), also known as European ash, grows throughout Western and Central Europe, from plains to mountain forests. A tree of light reaching 20 to 30 meters, it thrives in deep, damp soils, where its powerful roots give it a particularly dense, sinewy fiber. Used for centuries in cabinetmaking, bodywork and the manufacture of tool handles, ash has naturally found its place in handcrafted cutlery for its mechanical qualities and sober aesthetics.

Properties and technical characteristics

Ash wood has a moderate density, around 0.65 to 0.70 g/cm³, which gives it good strength without weighing down the knife in the hand. Its grain is generally straight and even, with a medium-fine texture that facilitates work at the workbench, from roughing to final sanding.

Color and visual appearance

Sapwood and heartwood share similar hues, ranging from creamy white to light golden beige, sometimes with slight pinkish nuances. The veins are discreet and parallel, giving the handle an elegant, unobtrusive appearance that enhances the quality of the blade without competing with it.

Machining and finishing properties

Ash is easy to machine with common tools - saws, planes, sanders. It accepts drilling well and has no tendency to splinter at the edge of the hole, which is an advantage for handle assemblies. It finishes perfectly in oil, wax or varnish, and can also be stabilized to enhance its resistance to humidity.

How to choose ash for your knife?

Ash wood is suitable for a wide range of knives, from kitchen knives to hunting and bushcraft knives. Its predictable machining behavior makes it an excellent apprentice wood, but its mechanical qualities and final finish will satisfy experienced craftsmen just as much.

Ash is classified as a European hardwood, with a Janka hardness of around 5,000 N [À VÉRIFIER]. It is stronger than pine or basswood, but easier to work than oak or ebony, making it a practical balance for craft cutlery.

Is it necessary to stabilize ash for knife handles?

Stabilization is not mandatory for ash. Under normal conditions of use - indoors, occasional to moderate use - raw ash wood treated with oil offers satisfactory performance. For prolonged exposure to humidity or intensive outdoor use, stabilized ash is preferable and is available in our catalog.

What finish do you recommend for an ash handle?

Baked linseed oil or hard oil are the most suitable finishes: they penetrate the wood, strengthen the fiber and give a natural satin finish. Polyurethane varnish is possible, but less recommended for cutlery as it creates a surface film that can flake off over time.
