Horn is a keratinized material that covers the bony pin bones of ungulates. Tusks, on the other hand, are hypertrophied canines found in certain species such as the warthog. These naturally-occurring materials have been used in the manufacture of utilitarian and decorative objects since prehistoric times, and artisan cutlery is one of their most noble outlets. Each horn or tusk is unique: its shape, curve, color and grain vary according to the animal, its age and its environment. Properties and technical characteristics

Animal horn has interesting mechanical properties for cutlery. Its keratinized structure gives it good shock resistance, while remaining relatively light in the hand. It works well in the workshop - with a file, abrasive paper or lathe - and takes on a beautiful satin to glossy polish, depending on the finish chosen.

Species diversity

• Buffalo: massive horn, black to dark brown, tight grain, very resistant.
• Zebu: dense and solid, cream to brown in color, regular fibers.
• Ram: spiral horn, warm brown to beige, fine grain.
• Warthog: natural ivory tusk, cream to golden hue, fine structure.
• Springbok and blesbock: fine, slender horns, easy to cut into wafers.
• Koudou: large spiral horn, complex patterns, often bulky pieces.
• Impala: light, regular horn, beige to brown tones.

How to choose a horn or tusk for your knife?

The choice of a horn depends on several criteria that the craftsman must define in advance:

• The final use of the knife: a working knife calls for a dense horn (buffalo, zebu); a ceremonial piece can afford a more ornamental material (warthog, kudu).
• The size of the handle: large buffalo or kudu horns offer wide plates; springbok or impala horns are better suited to slender, elongated shapes.
• Craftsman's skill level: cow and zebu horns are recommended for beginners because of their regularity. Warthog tusks require more skill, due to their natural curvature.
• Desired finish: all horns can be polished to a high gloss, but some (buffalo, blesbock) reveal particularly deep reflections after fine sanding.

How do I care for a horn handle?

A horn handle does not require intensive maintenance. A light oiling with mineral oil or natural wax is enough to preserve its appearance and prevent it from drying out. Prolonged immersion in water and extreme temperature variations should be avoided.

Are the horns sold by Mercorne subject to any regulations?

The species offered in the Mercorne catalog (buffalo, zebu, ram, warthog, springbok, blesbock, kudu, impala, cow) are not subject to CITES regulations. These materials are freely marketable in France and the European Union. For any material subject to the CITES convention (mammoth ivory, for example), Mercorne systematically provides the required compliance documents.
