Composite materials for knives: presentation and history

Composite materials refer to any material created by the combination of two or more distinct substances, the assembly of which generates properties superior to those of each component taken separately. Their introduction into the cutlery industry is relatively recent: until the middle of the ^20th century, cutlers worked almost exclusively with wood, bone, horn and animal materials. It was from the 1960s-1980s, with advances in the aerospace and military industries, that materials such as G10, Micarta and carbon fiber gradually found their way into cutlery workshops. Today, composites represent a family in their own right, alongside stabilized woods, horns and fossils.

Properties and technical features

The great strength of composite materials lies in their versatility. Depending on their composition, they offer very different profiles, adapted to each use.

Strength and resistance

G10 (epoxy glass fiber) and carbon fiber are among the most impact- and bending-resistant materials used in cutlery. They are insensitive to humidity, acids and temperature variations: decisive assets for outdoor, kitchen and tactical knives.

Aesthetics and uniqueness

Cellulose acetate, Juma®, Pearly Horn or Mercorne inclusions offer unique visual effects: pearlescent effects, transparencies, materials inlaid in the resin. These composites are ideal for cutlers looking for an identifiable piece, a creation with a strong identity. The world-renowned Raffir range takes this aesthetic work to a very high level: reconstituted bone, Calceon, flax fiber composites, each reference is a material in itself.

Ease of processing

Most composites can be sawn, milled and sanded using standard workshop tools. Their homogeneous structure means there are no surprises when cutting, unlike natural materials: no knots, no hidden cracks, no variations from one board to the next.

How do I choose a composite material for my knife?

The choice of a composite depends on three main criteria:

• The knife's use: for a kitchen or outdoor knife subject to humidity, prefer G10, Micarta or Raffir composites, which are resistant to water and cleaning products. For a collector's item or a gift, cellulose acetate, Juma® or an inclusion by Mercorne provide an incomparable visual effect.
• The desired level of finish: some composites can be polished to a deep gloss (acetate, Juma®, Pearly Horn), while others retain a characteristic matte or textured appearance (grooved G10, Micarta, carbon fiber).
• Workshop experience: for a beginner knifemaker, G10 and Micarta are safe bet: stable, predictable, easy to square. Translucent resins and inclusions require greater care when drilling and setting rivets.

Frequently asked questions about composite knife materials

What's the difference between G10 and Micarta?

G10 is made from layers of fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin, giving it maximum rigidity and resistance to humidity. Micarta uses layers of fabric, linen or paper impregnated with phenolic resin: it's slightly softer, with a more "organic" feel and a grip often considered warmer. Both are excellent choices for heavy-duty knives.

Are composite materials strong enough for a kitchen knife?

Yes, G10, Micarta and Raffir composites are highly resistant to repeated contact with water, food acids and cleaning products. Unlike natural wood, they do not swell or warp with humidity. They are widely used by professional cutlers for top-of-the-range kitchen knives intended for everyday use.

What is an inclusion by Mercorne?

An inclusion is a composite material manufactured in the Mercorne workshop since 2006: natural elements (dried flowers, moss, minerals, seeds) are inlaid in a block of transparent or colored resin, then cut into ready-to-use sheets. Each plate is unique, making it an ideal choice for collector's knives or personalized gift pieces.

What is the Raffir range?

Raffir is a Danish brand renowned worldwide for its innovative composites: reconstituted dinosaur bone, Calceon (reconstituted tortoiseshell), resinated linen fiber, textured materials...
