Yew wood for knives | Taxus baccata handles | Mercorne

Yew wood (Taxus baccata) is one of the most distinctive woods used in cutlery making. As a slow-growing tree, it develops a dense, tight grain that gives handles a firm grip and excellent wear resistance. Its color palette—ranging from ivory yellow to orange-brown with hints of pink—changes over time when exposed to light, giving each piece a unique character. Native to Europe, it is now rare in the supply chain, making it all the more prized by cutlers seeking uniqueness.

At Mercorne, yew wood is selected with particular attention to the quality of the grain and the absence of structural defects. Each piece is cut in our workshop in France to precise dimensions, tailored for handle work. For any questions about selecting a piece or pairing it with a blade, Olivier will personally address your technical inquiries.
