Wood stabilization is a technique that originated in the American industry in the 1970s, and was gradually adopted by cutlery makers in search of materials that combine natural aesthetics with durability. The principle is simple in its definition, demanding in its implementation: the wood is placed under vacuum in a treatment chamber, then impregnated with a liquid acrylic resin that penetrates every fiber. After heat-controlled polymerization, the resin solidifies within the wood itself, transforming its cellular structure without altering its natural appearance. This process makes it possible to work with species previously considered too soft, too light or too unstable for cutlery - such as poplar, lime or palm.

Dimensional stability

Once stabilized, wood no longer works. Variations in humidity, repeated contact with water and thermal shock no longer cause swelling, shrinkage or cracking. For a knife handle intended for regular use - in the kitchen, outdoors, in a collection - this stability is decisive.

Density and machining behavior

The density of stabilized wood is always higher than that of the original wood, and systematically exceeds 1 g/cm³: even poplar, one of the lightest species, no longer floats once treated. This increase in density improves machining resistance, facilitates polishing and produces a mirror-like surface that reveals the wood's moirures, grain and shimmer with a precision impossible to achieve with varnish.

Color and aesthetics

Resin can be colorless - to preserve the natural appearance of the essence - or pigmented in a wide range of shades. Color stabilization enables spectacular effects: gradations, enhanced grain, contrasts between light wood and dark resin. Each block is unique by definition, as the structure of the wood guides the diffusion of the color.

Can stabilized wood come into contact with water?

Yes, and this is precisely one of the major advantages of stabilization: resin-impregnated wood no longer reacts to humidity. The absence of additional surface treatment is often recommended: the resin itself plays the role of protection, and careful polishing reveals the depth and reflections of the material better than any varnish.
